Where Life Begins - Week 7 Day 3

WEEK 7 // DAY 3

FILLED TO BE FORMED

Paul gives a contrast that is easy to misunderstand if we only read it as a warning against drunkenness. That warning matters, but Paul is doing something deeper. He is asking a question about influence. What is shaping you? What is controlling you? What are you allowing to affect your speech, judgment, desires, relationships, and direction?

When someone is drunk, alcohol changes how they behave. It affects their words, balance, decisions, emotions, and relationships. Paul says the people of God should not surrender themselves to something that distorts and destroys. Instead, they are to be filled with the Spirit. He is not saying, “Do not be controlled by wine; simply control yourself.” That would still leave us at the center. He is saying, “Come under the life-giving influence of the Holy Spirit.”

This is important because you will be formed by whatever fills you. If fear fills you, fear will shape your relationships. If anger fills you, anger will shape your speech. If envy fills you, envy will shape how you see others. If hurry fills you, hurry will shape your attention. If comfort fills you, comfort will shape your obedience. But if the Spirit fills you, the life of Jesus begins to shape you from the inside out.

Being filled with the Spirit is not a one-time moment you leave in the past. It is an ongoing posture of surrender. It is open hands before God. “Holy Spirit, I surrender to You. I depend on You. I am open to Your leading. Help me respond to You.” This is not reserved for pastors, ministry leaders, or unusually spiritual people. It is the normal Christian life.

Jesus is the perfect picture of a life fully yielded to the Father. He did not live out of fear, pride, selfish ambition, or control. He lived in loving surrender. Through the Spirit, that same surrendered life begins to take shape in you and among us. Today, ask honestly: what is filling me? Then invite the Spirit to take the shaping place in your life again.

Reflection Questions:

  • What contrast does Paul make in Ephesians 5:18?
  • Why does what fills us also form us?
  • What influence is currently shaping your words, desires, or relationships most?
  • How can you practice surrender to the Spirit today?

Journaling Prompt:

Take time to write about what has been filling your heart and mind lately, and reflect on what it would mean to open yourself again to the Spirit’s influence.
Prayer Starter: Holy Spirit, fill me with Your presence and leadership. Shape my desires, words, choices, and relationships so that the life of Jesus becomes visible in me.
