WEEK 5 // DAY 5
SENT WITH CONFIDENCE
The passage ends with Jesus ascending into heaven while the disciples watch. This moment is not simply Jesus leaving. It is a sign that the risen Jesus reigns. He is not absent in the sense of being powerless or uninvolved. He is exalted, alive, and ruling with authority. The disciples are not being sent by a memory. They are being sent by the living Lord.
That matters because mission can feel overwhelming when we think it depends on us. We may look at the needs around us, the brokenness of the world, the resistance people have toward faith, or our own weakness and wonder how our witness could possibly matter. But Acts 1 grounds our confidence not in our ability, but in the reign of Jesus and the power of the Spirit. The mission belongs to Him before it belongs to us.
The angels also remind the disciples that Jesus will return. This gives urgency and hope to their calling. The church lives between the ascension and the return of Jesus. We do not know the timing, but we know the direction of history. Jesus is alive, His kingdom is coming, and His people are sent to bear witness until He comes again. Our purpose is not random. It is rooted in the story God is bringing to completion.
This means you do not have to wait until you feel fully ready to speak about Jesus. The disciples were still learning. They still had questions. They had not mastered every detail. But Jesus had given them His Spirit and His mission. The Spirit meets us in obedience, not merely after we feel prepared. Often, courage grows as we take the next faithful step.
Today, let the ascension strengthen you. Jesus reigns over the mission He has given you. You are not sent alone, and you are not responsible for outcomes you cannot control. Your calling is to be faithful, available, prayerful, and dependent. The church advances when believers depend on God’s power more than their own comfort.
So go with confidence—not confidence in yourself, but confidence in Jesus. The One who sends you is alive. The Spirit who empowers you is present. The mission you have been given is secure in the hands of the risen King.
Reflection Questions:
- What happens to Jesus in Acts 1:9–11?
- How does the ascension give confidence to Jesus’ followers?
- Where do you feel inadequate or unready to be used by God?
- What step of obedience can you take in confidence this week?
Journaling Prompt:
Write about an area where you feel unready or afraid, and reflect on how the reign of Jesus and the presence of the Spirit give you confidence to obey.Prayer Starter: Jesus, thank You that You are alive and reigning. Holy Spirit, give me confidence to obey before I feel fully ready, trusting that You meet me as I follow.
