WEEK 3 // DAY 5
A NEW IDENTITY
The deepest expression of freedom is not just what you are freed from—it is what you are brought into. Paul makes it clear that through the work of the Holy Spirit, you have not only been forgiven but adopted. This means your relationship with God is no longer defined by distance, uncertainty, or fear. It is defined by belonging. You are not simply someone who has been pardoned—you are someone who has been welcomed into the family of God.
The language Paul uses here is deeply relational. The word “Abba” is not formal or distant; it reflects closeness, trust, and intimacy. It is the language of a child speaking to a loving father. This is how the Spirit leads you to relate to God. Not as someone trying to prove your worth, but as someone who already belongs. This changes the posture of your entire spiritual life.
Without this reality, it is easy to slip back into a mindset of fear. You may begin to relate to God as though He is evaluating you, measuring your performance, or waiting for you to fail. But Paul says the Spirit you have received does not lead you back into fear—it leads you into confidence. The Spirit actively testifies within you that you are God’s child. This is not something you have to convince yourself of; it is something the Spirit continually affirms in your heart.
This assurance becomes the foundation for how you live. When you know you belong, you no longer act out of insecurity. You no longer obey out of fear of rejection. Instead, your response to God flows from love and trust. You begin to approach Him more honestly, depend on Him more freely, and rest in His presence more deeply.
And this identity does not fluctuate with your performance. On your best days and your worst days, the reality remains the same: you are a child of God. The Spirit does not withdraw that identity when you struggle—He reminds you of it even more. He draws you back to the Father, not away from Him.
The invitation today is to live from that identity. To let go of fear and step into the confidence that comes from belonging. You are not trying to earn a place—you already have one.
Reflection Questions:
- What does Paul say about your identity through the Spirit?
- What does it mean to call God “Abba, Father”?
- Where do you still relate to God out of fear instead of belonging?
- How would your life change if you fully trusted that you are His child?
Journaling Prompt:
Write about what it means that you are a child of God, and reflect on how that identity shapes the way you approach Him.Prayer Starter: Father, thank You for adopting me into Your family and calling me Your child. Holy Spirit, help me live today with confidence, knowing that I belong to You.
