WEEK 3 // DAY 4
NEW POWER
Freedom in Christ does not mean that struggle disappears—it means that your relationship to that struggle changes. Paul is clear that sin is still something you must actively resist, but he is equally clear that you are no longer powerless in that resistance. The difference is not that sin is gone, but that its authority has been broken. The Holy Spirit now lives in you, and because of that, you are no longer under sin’s rule.
Before the Spirit’s work, sin functions like a master. It shapes your desires, influences your decisions, and often feels unavoidable. Even when you want to change, you find yourself returning to the same patterns. But Paul introduces a new reality: through the Spirit, you now have the ability to “put to death” those patterns. That phrase is strong and intentional. It means that sin is no longer something you must tolerate—it is something you can confront.
However, Paul does not say that you do this on your own. The phrase “by the Spirit” is essential. This is not about increasing your effort or relying on your willpower. It is about depending on the Spirit’s power. The Spirit does not remove your responsibility, but He transforms your capacity. He strengthens you to say no when you once felt trapped. He redirects your desires. He helps you choose differently, even in moments that used to feel automatic.
This also means that growth will often look gradual rather than immediate. Putting sin to death is not a one-time moment—it is an ongoing process. There will be days when you feel strong and days when you feel weak. But the presence of the Spirit means that you are not starting from zero each time. You are living from a place of new authority. Sin may still speak, but it no longer has the final word.
The invitation today is to rely on that power. When you face temptation, pause and acknowledge the Spirit’s presence. You are not alone in that moment. You can ask for help. You can choose differently. And over time, as you continue to respond to the Spirit, you will begin to see real change—not because you forced it, but because the Spirit is forming something new within you.
Reflection Questions:
- What does Paul say about putting sin to death in this passage?
- Why is it important that this happens “by the Spirit”?
- Where do you feel stuck in your struggle with sin?
- What would it look like to rely on the Spirit’s power in that area today?
Journaling Prompt:
Take time to write about an area of your life where you feel stuck, and reflect on how the Spirit might be inviting you to rely on His power instead of your own.Prayer Starter: Holy Spirit, give me strength to resist sin and courage to choose what is right. Lead me into new patterns of life and help me rely on Your power instead of my own.
