WEEK 2 // DAY 4
LIFTED UP FOR YOUR LIFE
If John 3 only spoke about the Spirit in general terms, you might think new birth were some vague spiritual feeling. But Jesus will not let the conversation stay undefined. He grounds the whole promise of life in Himself. He points to the story of Moses lifting up the bronze serpent in the wilderness. The people had sinned. Judgment had come. But God provided a way of rescue: those who looked in trust were healed. Jesus says that story points forward to Him. He will be lifted up. In John’s Gospel, that means the cross.
This is one of the most important truths in the Christian life: the Spirit does not work apart from Jesus. The Spirit applies what Jesus has accomplished. Jesus secures salvation for you through His death and resurrection. The Holy Spirit brings that salvation into your actual life. He awakens your heart to trust Christ. He makes the work of Jesus personal, real, and life-giving. So the Christian life is never “just Jesus” in a distant, historical sense, and it is never “just spirituality” without the cross. It is the saving work of the Son made alive in you by the Spirit.
This means your hope is not in your sincerity, your intensity, or your spiritual performance. Your hope is in Christ crucified and risen. Eternal life is not awarded to people who finally become good enough. It is given to those who believe in Jesus. And belief here is more than agreeing with facts. It is trust. It is looking away from yourself and resting the weight of your life on Him. It is saying, “I cannot save myself. I cannot give myself life. I receive what You have done for me.”
That kind of trust changes everything. It frees you from the exhausting project of self-salvation. It frees you from measuring your standing before God by how strong you feel today. It frees you to live as someone loved by the Father, rescued by the Son, and indwelt by the Spirit. So when shame rises, look to Jesus. When fear rises, look to Jesus. When you are tempted to fix yourself before coming to God, look to Jesus. The Spirit’s work in you will always lead you there. He does not spotlight Himself apart from Christ. He opens your eyes to the beauty, sufficiency, and saving power of the Son who was lifted up for you.
Reflection Questions:
- What does Jesus’ reference to being “lifted up” teach you about His mission?
- Why is it important that the Spirit’s work is grounded in the saving work of Christ?
- Where are you tempted to trust your own sincerity more than Jesus’ finished work?
- What would it look like for you to rest the weight of your life on Jesus today?
Journaling Prompt:
Write about what it means for you personally that Jesus was lifted up to bring you life. Let your words move from explanation into gratitude and trust.Prayer Starter: Jesus, thank You for being lifted up for sinners like me. Holy Spirit, help me rest in Christ instead of trying to save myself.
