WEEK 2 // DAY 3
THE SPIRIT GIVES LIFE
Jesus uses the image of the wind to help Nicodemus understand the Holy Spirit. Wind cannot be controlled, boxed in, or managed. You cannot command it to arrive on your schedule. You cannot hold it in your hands. And yet you know it is real because you can hear it, feel it, and see what it moves. Jesus says the Spirit is like that. His work is sovereign, mysterious, and real. He is not mechanical. He is not manipulated by formulas, moods, or methods. He is God, and He acts with wisdom and freedom.
That truth is humbling, but it is also comforting. It is humbling because it means you cannot manufacture spiritual life. You cannot force new birth by trying hard enough, saying the right words, or creating the right moment. You cannot engineer revival in your own heart through pressure and performance. But it is comforting because it means the burden is not on you to create life. The Spirit is not waiting for you to become impressive enough for Him to work. He is able to move in quiet moments, in slow seasons, in honest prayers, and in ordinary days. He is not limited by your weakness.
Sometimes people worry because they do not have a dramatic testimony or a clearly defined turning point. They hear about new birth and assume it must always feel like lightning. But Jesus’ image makes room for different stories. Sometimes the Spirit’s work is sudden and unmistakable. Other times it is like dawn. Light slowly begins to fill the sky, and only later do you realize how dark it had been before. New hunger for God, new tenderness toward Jesus, new awareness of sin, new desire for truth, new discomfort with hiding—these may seem small, but they are often signs that the Spirit is already moving.
And that means you should not despise small evidences of life. If you are beginning to tell the truth more quickly, that matters. If you are becoming more willing to confess sin instead of defend yourself, that matters. If Jesus feels more precious to you than He once did, that matters. These are not things you produce by sheer willpower. These are often the Spirit bending the branches of your life. So today, rather than anxiously inspecting yourself, pay attention with hope. Ask the Spirit to help you notice His work. Thank Jesus that His salvation is not abstract or distant. By the Spirit, the life of Christ becomes real in you.
Reflection Questions:
- What does Jesus’ picture of the wind teach you about the Holy Spirit?
- Why is it good news that the Spirit cannot be controlled by human effort?
- What small signs of spiritual life or growth have you overlooked in your own life?
- How can you respond with greater trust to the Spirit’s quiet work today?
Journaling Prompt:
Take time to write down any small but real signs of the Spirit’s work in your life. Thank God for what may seem ordinary but is actually evidence of life.Prayer Starter: Holy Spirit, help me trust Your work even when I cannot explain it fully. Open my eyes to see the ways You are bringing the life of Jesus alive in me.
