NOT ASHAMED OF JESUS

Paul tells Timothy, “Do not be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord.” Those words matter because following Jesus can be costly. Paul is in prison because of the Gospel. He knows Timothy may face pressure, misunderstanding, rejection, or suffering. So Paul urges him not to hide his faith, not to shrink back from Jesus, and not to be embarrassed by the good news.

But Paul does not ground this courage in Timothy’s personality or strength. He grounds it in what God has done. God “has saved us and called us to a holy life—not because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace.” Your faith begins with grace. You are not trying to earn your place with God. You are not trying to create your identity. You are not trying to prove your worth. Jesus has saved you and called you according to His purpose.

That is why shame loses its power. The Gospel is not the announcement that you were strong enough, moral enough, or impressive enough to reach God. It is the good news that Jesus came for sinners, died for us, rose again, and brought life to light. Paul says Jesus “has destroyed death.” That is not small news. That is not a private preference. That is victory beyond anything the world can offer.

Because Jesus has destroyed death, you do not need to be ashamed of Him. You do not need to be harsh, argumentative, or obnoxious. You do not need to force every conversation or pretend to have every answer. But you also do not need to hide the One who saved you. You can speak of Jesus with humility and love. You can live in a way that makes His grace visible. You can identify with Him even when it feels uncomfortable.

There may be places where you are tempted to keep your faith quiet. Maybe you worry what coworkers will think. Maybe family conversations feel tense. Maybe friends assume faith is outdated or irrelevant. Maybe you do not want to be associated with negative examples of Christianity you have seen. Those concerns may be real, but Paul’s words invite you to a deeper confidence.

Do not be ashamed of the One who was not ashamed to come near to you. Jesus took on flesh, bore your sin, endured the cross, and rose in victory. He has brought life and immortality to light through the Gospel. The world may not always understand, but Jesus is worthy of your trust, your allegiance, your worship, and your witness.
