FAN INTO FLAME

Paul reminds Timothy to “fan into flame the gift of God.” That image is powerful. A flame can be real and still need tending. A fire can be present and still need oxygen, attention, and care. Paul does not say, “Timothy, since God has given you a gift, you can coast.” He says, “Fan it into flame.” What God has placed in Timothy must be nurtured, practiced, strengthened, and used.

That is true for you too. God has placed gifts, burdens, experiences, compassion, wisdom, and opportunities in your life. You may have a gift for encouragement, teaching, serving, leading, praying, listening, giving, welcoming, organizing, creating, mentoring, or noticing people others overlook. You may have a burden for children, students, neighbors, families, the lonely, or people who feel far from God. Those things are not meant to stay buried.

But Paul also knows Timothy may be tempted toward fear. That is why he says, “The Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.” This is not a command to become loud, impressive, or someone you are not. It is an invitation to stop letting fear smother what God has placed within you. Timothy does not need confidence in himself as much as he needs confidence in the Spirit who lives in him.

Jesus knows our weakness. He called ordinary people to follow Him. He sent fearful disciples into the world as witnesses. He did not abandon them to their own strength. After His death and resurrection, He poured out the Holy Spirit so His people could live and serve with power, love, and faithfulness. The same Spirit who strengthened Timothy is at work in all who belong to Jesus.

Fear often tells you to wait. Wait until you know more. Wait until you are older. Wait until you are less busy. Wait until you feel qualified. Wait until someone else asks. Wait until the risk disappears. But faith does not grow by being hidden. Gifts are fanned into flame through obedient use.

What has God placed in you that needs tending? Maybe the flame feels small. That is okay. You do not need to begin with a bonfire. Start with what is there. Pray the prayer. Send the note. Serve in the role. Mentor the student. Encourage the child. Invite the neighbor. Join the team. Use the gift. The Spirit does not give you fear as your master. He gives power, love, and self-discipline so you can be faithfuL.
