THE STORY BEYOND YOU

After Philip tells the Ethiopian the good news about Jesus, they come to some water. The Ethiopian asks, “What can stand in the way of my being baptized?” His question is full of hope. This man who may have known barriers, exclusion, and distance now sees that Jesus has opened the way. He wants to respond.

Philip helps him take the next step. They stop the chariot, go down into the water, and Philip baptizes him. Baptism becomes a visible response to the good news of Jesus. It is a way of saying, “I belong to Christ. His death and resurrection have become the defining reality of my life.” The Ethiopian’s response is personal, public, and joyful.

Then the story takes a surprising turn. Philip is carried away, and the Ethiopian continues on his way rejoicing. Philip does not control the rest of the man’s journey. He does not travel with him back to Ethiopia. He does not get to see every ripple effect of this encounter. He simply obeys the Spirit, points the man to Jesus, helps him take the next step, and trusts God with the rest.

That is a deeply freeing picture of purpose. God does not ask you to control someone’s whole spiritual journey. He invites you to be faithful with the part He gives you. You may plant a seed, answer a question, offer an invitation, pray with someone, share your story, or walk with a person through one next step. You may never see the full fruit. But no act of obedience offered to Jesus is wasted.

The Gospel often moves farther than we can follow. In the ancient world, Ethiopia was associated with the ends of the earth. This single conversation on a desert road was part of Jesus’ promise that His witnesses would carry the Gospel from Jerusalem to Judea and Samaria and to the ends of the earth. What may have looked like a small moment was part of God’s global mission.

Your ordinary faithfulness may matter more than you know. A conversation with a child, a prayer for a neighbor, a coffee offered at a community event, a patient answer to a spiritual question, or an invitation to take a next step may become part of a story beyond your sight.

If you are wondering what stands in the way of coming to Jesus, the answer is nothing He has not overcome. And if you already follow Him, your invitation is clear: follow the Spirit’s nudge, point people to Jesus, help them take the next step, and trust God with the story beyond you.
