STAY NEAR AND LISTEN

The Spirit gives Philip a simple instruction: “Go to that chariot and stay near it.” That phrase is worth slowing down for. The Spirit does not tell Philip to take over, force a conversation, impress the Ethiopian official, or give a speech. He tells Philip to stay near. Purpose begins with availability, but it continues through attentiveness.

Philip gets close enough to listen. He hears the Ethiopian reading from Isaiah. Then Philip asks a question: “Do you understand what you are reading?” He does not begin by telling the man everything he knows. He does not assume he understands the man’s story. He starts with presence, listening, and a thoughtful question.

That is a beautiful picture of everyday witness. People are not projects. They are image-bearers made by God and loved by Jesus. Faithful mission is not about forcing spiritual moments or treating conversations like sales pitches. It is about staying near enough to notice the real person in front of you. It is about listening for the questions they are already carrying.

The Ethiopian official is powerful, educated, and important. He manages the treasury of the queen of Ethiopia. Yet he is spiritually hungry. He has gone to Jerusalem to worship, and now he is reading Scripture on the road home. From the outside, someone might assume he has everything he needs. But he is still asking, “How can I understand unless someone helps me?”

You may be surrounded by people who look put together but are carrying deep questions. A neighbor, coworker, parent, student, teammate, or friend may be wondering whether God sees them, whether Scripture can make sense, whether they belong, or whether Jesus has anything to say to their real life. You may never know unless you slow down enough to listen.

Jesus modeled this nearness perfectly. He came close to us in the incarnation. He entered our world, listened to real people, asked questions, told the truth, and moved with compassion. He did not treat people as interruptions to His mission. People were the mission. At the cross, He came all the way near to our sin and death so we could be brought near to God. The invitation today is simple: stop seeing the Spirit’s leading as an interruption and start seeing people. Stay near. Listen well. Ask good questions. Trust that the Holy Spirit may already be stirring something in the person in front of you.
