WEEK 5 // DAY 1

PURPOSE IN CHALLENGING CIRCUMSTANCES

Acts 8 does not begin in comfortable circumstances. Stephen has just been killed. Saul approves of his death. A great persecution breaks out against the church in Jerusalem, and believers are scattered throughout Judea and Samaria. This is not the kind of setting most of us would choose for mission. It is marked by grief, disruption, pressure, and loss.

Yet verse 4 says, “Those who had been scattered preached the word wherever they went.” The Gospel keeps moving, not because circumstances are easy, but because Jesus is alive and His Spirit is at work in ordinary people. The apostles remain in Jerusalem, but the scattered believers carry the good news with them. These are not all platform preachers or public leaders. They are everyday followers of Jesus whose lives have been changed by the resurrection.

God’s purpose for your life is not limited to seasons when everything feels settled. Sometimes His mission becomes clearer when life is interrupted. A move, a loss, a change, a difficult season, or an unexpected transition may feel like the end of something. But God can use even challenging circumstances to open new doors for faithfulness.

This does not mean God delights in suffering or that every painful situation is easy to understand. The persecution in Acts was real. The grief was real. The danger was real. But the risen Jesus was also real. His victory was not dependent on ideal conditions. Because Jesus defeated sin and death, the Gospel could move through ordinary people in uncertain places.

You may be living through circumstances you would not have chosen. Maybe a relationship is strained, your schedule is interrupted, your work feels unstable, your family is changing, or your future is unclear. You may be tempted to think, “Once life calms down, then I can live with purpose.” But Acts 8 invites you to look again. God may be at work right where you are, even in the disruption.

Your purpose is not to pretend everything is fine. Your purpose is to remain available to Jesus in the middle of real life. The Holy Spirit can use your presence, your words, your faithfulness, and your ordinary conversations in ways you cannot yet see. Wherever you have been scattered, placed, sent, or interrupted, Jesus is still with you. His mission still moves. His Gospel still bears fruit.
