ENCOURAGEMENT FORMED BY THE SPIRIT

Acts 11 gives us one of the clearest descriptions of Barnabas: “He was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and faith.” That sentence helps us understand the source of his encouragement. Barnabas was not merely naturally positive. He was not simply an upbeat personality. He was not just someone who knew the right thing to say at the right time. His encouragement flowed from the Holy Spirit’s work in him.

You cannot manufacture encouragement like that on your own. You can try to be nicer. You can try to say more positive things. You can try to give compliments. Those may be good starts, but transforming, Gospel-shaped encouragement flows from something deeper. It flows from the Holy Spirit forming the life of Jesus in you.

The Holy Spirit opens your eyes to people you might otherwise overlook. He gives you courage to speak words that are truthful, gracious, and timely. He helps you see grace where others only see a past. He frees you from comparison so you can celebrate what God is doing in someone else. He gives you patience to walk with people as they grow. He reminds you that you have first been encouraged by God Himself.

In Jesus, God has moved toward you. In Jesus, God has spoken grace over you. In Jesus, God has not defined you by your worst moment. In Jesus, God has opened the door for you to belong. In Jesus, God has given you another chapter. You do not encourage others so God will love you. You encourage others because you have already been loved, strengthened, forgiven, and restored by Christ.

Barnabas also builds the team. He goes to Tarsus to look for Saul, brings him to Antioch, and for a whole year they teach the church together. Barnabas does not need ministry to be centered on himself. He makes room for another person’s gifts. That too is Spirit-formed encouragement. It says, “There is room for you. God has given you something that can strengthen the body.”

So the invitation today is not simply, “Try harder to be encouraging.” The invitation is, “Be filled with the Holy Spirit. Stay close to Jesus. Let His grace reshape the way you see people. Let His voice become the voice you carry into the lives of others.” As the Holy Spirit works in you, encouragement can flow through you, so others are strengthened and Jesus is made known.
