SEEING GRACE AND STAYING FAITHFUL

Acts 11 tells us that believers were scattered after the persecution connected to Stephen’s death. As they traveled, they shared the good news about Jesus. Some spoke to Jews only, but others went to Antioch and began speaking to Greeks also. The Gospel was crossing boundaries. People from different backgrounds were hearing about Jesus, believing, and turning to the Lord.?

When news reached Jerusalem, the church sent Barnabas to Antioch. Barnabas arrives, looks at what is happening, and Luke says he “saw what the grace of God had done.” Barnabas had trained eyes for grace.
He could have focused first on what was unfamiliar. He could have been suspicious because this ministry looked different from what he was used to. He could have noticed everything these new believers did not yet understand. Instead, he saw grace, and he was glad. Encouragement learns to celebrate God’s work in others.

That can be harder than it sounds. Sometimes another person’s growth makes you feel insecure. Someone else receives an opportunity. Someone else is noticed. Someone else has gifts you do not have. Someone else does something differently than you, and it works. In those moments, comparison, criticism, jealousy, or suspicion can rise up quickly. Barnabas chooses instead to celebrate what God is doing.

Barnabas does not stop with celebration. Biblical encouragement is not flattery. It does not simply say, “You are amazing; keep doing whatever feels good.” It helps people remain faithful to Jesus. Sometimes encouragement comforts. Sometimes it challenges. Sometimes it says, “Keep going. Don’t quit.” Sometimes it says, “Remember who Jesus is calling you to become.”

Jesus is full of grace and truth. He welcomes us as we are, but He loves us too much to leave us unchanged. He calls us to Himself, forgives us, gives us His Spirit, and teaches us to walk in new life. Barnabas reflects that heart. He sees grace, rejoices in grace, and then calls people to wholehearted faithfulness.
