Victory Beyond the Cup - Week 1 Day 4

WEEK 1 // DAY 4

STEP BEFORE YOU SEE

Joshua 1 gives the call. Joshua 3 shows the step. By the time Israel reaches the Jordan River, the promised land is on the other side. But the river is in front of them, and it is not a small obstacle. The water is high. The crossing is dangerous. The people cannot simply walk across in their own strength.

God gives instructions. The priests are to carry the ark of the covenant, the sign of God’s presence among His people, and step into the river. Then comes the detail that matters: the waters do not stop until their feet touch the water. Many of us would prefer the miracle first and the step second. “God, part the water, and then I will step. Show me the full plan, and then I will obey. Remove every obstacle, and then I will trust You. Make me feel brave, and then I will move.”

But in Joshua 3, the priests step, and then the waters stop. That does not mean faith is reckless. Joshua prepares the people. The priests receive instructions. This is not chaos. Wisdom matters. Preparation matters. But there is still a moment when obedience requires a step. There is still a moment when someone’s foot has to touch the water.

You may be waiting for certainty before you obey. Sometimes waiting is faithful. Sometimes praying for clarity is wise. But sometimes “I’m praying about it” becomes a spiritual way to delay what God has already made clear. Sometimes “I’m not ready” becomes the excuse that keeps you permanently unavailable. Joshua 3 invites you to ask, “What has God made clear enough for me to obey today?”

The good news is that Israel does not step into the river alone. The presence of God leads the way. God does not stand behind His people shouting, “Good luck!” God goes before them. This is the Gospel hope underneath your courage. You do not create your own victory. You follow the God who goes before you.

Jesus is the true and better Joshua. He stepped into the waters of judgment for you. He faced the enemy you could not defeat. He entered death itself and rose in victory. Now He does not call you toward a victory you must manufacture. He calls you to live from the victory He has already won.

Reflection Questions:

  • What had to happen before the Jordan River stopped flowing?
  • What does this story teach about the relationship between trust and obedience?
  • Where are you waiting for certainty before taking a faithful step?
  • What is one concrete step of obedience you can take today?

Journaling Prompt:

Write about your “Jordan River” step. Name the fear, the invitation, and the specific act of obedience Jesus may be placing in front of you.
Prayer Starter: Jesus, give me courage to step before I see the whole path. Thank you for going before me in love and victory.
