Trust & Obey - Week 6 Day 3

WEEK 6 // DAY 3

THE NEXT FAITHFUL STEP

Read 1 Peter 5:6-11

Immediately after Peter tells believers to cast their anxieties on God, he writes, “Be alert and of sober mind.” Then he warns that the devil prowls like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour. That sequence matters. Surrender is not the same thing as spiritual passivity. Peter does not say, “Give your worries to God, then stop paying attention.” He says, “Give God what belongs to him—and stay awake to what belongs to you.” Trust releases control, but obedience remains active.

Peter’s picture of the enemy is intentionally serious. A lion looks for vulnerability. Peter’s readers were already suffering, which can make fear, isolation, bitterness, and hopelessness especially powerful temptations. When life hurts, lies can sound believable: “God has forgotten you. You are alone. Nothing will change. Obedience is not worth it. You might as well give up.” The enemy does not need to make you stop believing every Christian doctrine if he can gradually pull you away from trusting and following Jesus. Peter therefore says, “Resist him, standing firm in the faith.”

How do you resist? Peter does not tell believers to panic or become fascinated with the devil. He tells them to stand firm. You resist by remaining rooted in what is true. You stay in Scripture when lies are loud. You pray when fear wants to isolate you. You remain in Christian community when suffering tempts you to disappear. You keep obeying Jesus when compromise would be easier. You remember that Christ has already defeated sin and death through the cross and resurrection. The enemy may roar, but Jesus is Lord. Your resistance is not based on your ability to overpower evil; it is based on your confidence in the One who already has.

This is why “let go and let God” is incomplete if it means doing nothing. A farmer who trusts God for the harvest still plants the field. In the same way, surrendering an outcome to God frees you to take the next faithful step. You may not control whether the relationship is restored, but you can speak truth with love. You may not control what happens next in your career, but you can work with integrity today. You may not control your child’s choices, but you can pray, listen, guide, and love. You surrender what is God’s and remain faithful with what he has entrusted to you.

Stay alert. Resist the lie that God has abandoned you. Stand firm in what you know about Jesus. Surrender the outcome, and keep walking in obedience. Faithfulness is not knowing the entire path. It is staying close enough to Jesus to recognize and obey the next step he gives you.

Reflection Questions:

  • What commands does Peter give after telling believers to cast their cares on God?
  • Why does surrender not mean becoming passive?
  • Where are fear, discouragement, or uncertainty tempting you to stop moving forward?
  • What is the next faithful step Jesus is inviting you to take?

Journaling Prompt:

Take time to separate what you cannot control from what Jesus has clearly given you to do. Write one concrete next step of obedience and surrender the result to God.
Prayer Starter: Jesus, keep me alert and rooted in what is true. Help me release the outcome to you and faithfully take the next step you place in front of me.
