Trust & Obey - Week 6 Day 1

WEEK 6 // DAY 1

UNDER HIS MIGHTY HAND

Read 1 Peter 5:6-11

Peter begins this final section of his letter with a command that may sound simple but reaches deeply into the way you live: “Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand.” We often think humility means speaking softly about ourselves or refusing to brag. Peter is describing something more foundational. Humility is recognizing that God is God and you are not. You are created, loved, and limited. God is Creator, Sustainer, and Lord. His “mighty hand” is the hand that has rescued his people again and again, and Peter invites you to place yourself willingly underneath that hand.

That kind of humility becomes especially difficult when you desperately want to control an outcome. You can be responsible for loving your children, but you cannot control every decision they make. You can tell the truth, but you cannot control how someone responds. You can serve faithfully, but you cannot manufacture visible fruit. You can share Jesus, but you cannot make another person believe. Humility accepts the responsibility God has actually given you while releasing the role that belongs only to him. It says, “Jesus, I will obey you in what is mine to do, and I will trust you with what only you can do.”

Jesus himself shows us what this surrendered obedience looks like. He did not move toward the cross because circumstances were outside God’s control. He willingly submitted himself to the Father, trusting the Father even when obedience was costly. His humility was not weakness or passivity. It was faithful obedience rooted in complete trust. And through that obedience, God accomplished what no human effort could accomplish: our rescue from sin and our reconciliation with God. When you surrender control to God, you are not stepping into uncertainty alone. You are following Jesus.

Think of a farmer preparing a field. The farmer works. He prepares the soil, plants the seed, tends the crop, and does what faithfulness requires. But he cannot reach beneath the dirt and force life to happen. At some point, his work becomes waiting and trust. Your discipleship has the same rhythm. There are things Jesus asks you to do today, and there are outcomes he never asked you to carry. Trust and obedience meet when you faithfully do the first and humbly surrender the second.

Ask yourself today: What am I trying to control that belongs to God? You do not have to abandon responsibility, and you do not have to stop caring. Humility simply puts things back into their proper order. God is God. You are his beloved child. Take the next faithful step, then open your hands. Trust his timing. Trust his wisdom. Trust his mighty hand. Your job is obedience. The outcome belongs to him. This is not defeat; it is the freedom of living as a creature who knows that the Creator is wise, present, and trustworthy.

Reflection Questions:

  • What does Peter tell believers to do under God’s mighty hand?
  • How is biblical humility different from simply thinking less of yourself?
  • What outcome are you currently trying to control?
  • What responsibility is yours to obey, and what needs to be surrendered to God?

Journaling Prompt:

Take time to name one situation where you are carrying responsibility for an outcome that belongs to God. Write what faithful obedience looks like for you, and then intentionally release the result into his hands.
Prayer Starter: Father, you are God and I am not. Help me faithfully obey what you have given me to do and trust your mighty hand with what only you can control.
