ALIGNED WITH THE CORNERSTONE

In an ancient structure, the cornerstone provided orientation for the rest of the building. The other stones were placed in relationship to it. If something was out of alignment, you did not move the cornerstone to accommodate the wall. The wall had to be brought back into alignment with the cornerstone.

Jesus occupies that place for the people of God. The church is not ultimately built around a pastor (Hooray!), worship style, program, tradition, political identity, generation, or personal preference. Jesus determines the direction and shape of the whole thing. He is chosen and precious to God even though people rejected him. The opinions of those who rejected Jesus could not change who he was, and they could not stop God from making him the foundation of his new people.

Our alignment becomes a question of obedience and trust. There are moments when the teaching of Jesus will challenge the life you would naturally choose. Jesus tells you to forgive when resentment seems justified. He calls you toward generosity when self-protection feels safer. He tells you to love people you would rather avoid. He calls you to tell the truth when honesty may cost something. In those moments, you face a choice: will you attempt to move Jesus until he fits the life you already want, or will you allow Jesus to realign you?

Trust says, “Jesus sees more clearly than I do.” Obedience says, “Therefore, I will align my life with him.”
Peter then piles identity upon identity. Those who build their lives around Jesus are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, and God’s special possession. These are not trophies for spiritually impressive people. They are gifts of grace. God has gathered people from different places and stories and centered them around one cornerstone. We do not share identical personalities, preferences, ages, backgrounds, or opinions. Instead, our unity comes from a deeper place - from being aligned to Jesus.

Maybe you have been allowing fear, culture, convenience, or personal preference to speak more loudly than Jesus. Do not try to make Jesus fit. Come back to the Cornerstone. Listen again. Allow his truth and character to straighten what has shifted. Jesus was rejected, crucified, and raised. He has already proven that his way leads through death into life. He can be trusted. Let him set the direction.
