Trust & Obey - Week 2 Day 4

WEEK 2 // DAY 4

REDEEMED FROM AN EMPTY WAY OF LIFE

Read 1 Peter 1:13-21

Our ultimate belonging is with God, and therefore, we should not simply allow the values around us to determine the way we live. Peter tells us to live with “reverent fear.” He is not describing terror—the fear that God is waiting for you to fail so he can reject you. He is describing awe. Take God seriously. Take his goodness seriously. Take your new life seriously because of what it cost to bring you into it.

Peter explains that cost through the word redeemed. He says God has redeemed us from an “empty way of life.” Sin often promises exactly the opposite. Sin promises fulfillment, freedom, satisfaction, and control. But eventually, the very things we believe will give us freedom begin controlling us. Success becomes identity. Approval becomes a necessity. Anger becomes bitterness. Comfort becomes something we cannot live without.

Jesus did not come simply to improve that old way of life. He came to free you from it.
Peter says the price of your freedom was not silver or gold. It was the precious blood of Christ. Jesus is described as the spotless Lamb—the innocent One who offered himself for sinful people. The cross shows us simultaneously how serious sin is and how deeply God loves us. Our freedom was costly. Jesus willingly gave himself to bring us to him.

Sometimes God’s commands can feel restrictive. You may wonder why Jesus challenges a relationship, habit, attitude, or desire that seems comfortable. But Peter invites you to look at obedience through the cross. The One telling you to let go is the One who gave himself to free you. Jesus is not trying to take life away from you. He is trying to keep you from returning to the captivity from which he died to redeem you.

Obedience is not payment for grace. You could never repay what Jesus has done. It is the grateful response of a redeemed person saying, “Jesus, you gave yourself to lead me out of an empty way of life. I trust you enough not to go back.”

The Savior who shed his blood for you is not careless with your life. You can trust the One who has loved you at that cost.

  • What does Peter say believers have been redeemed from and what was the price?
  • How does the cross reveal both the seriousness of sin and the depth of God’s love?
  • Where are you tempted to return to something Jesus has been freeing you from?
  • What act of obedience would demonstrate that you trust the Redeemer who gave himself for you?

Journaling Prompt:

Write about one old pattern that promises life but ultimately leaves you empty. Place that pattern beside the cross and reflect on the freedom Jesus purchased for you.
Prayer Starter: Jesus, thank you for redeeming me with your precious blood. Help me trust your goodness enough to walk away from what leaves me empty and follow you into freedom.
