Trust & Obey - Week 1 Day 1

WEEK 1 // DAY 1

CHOSEN WHEN YOU FEEL SCATTERED

Read 1 Peter 1:1-9

Peter begins his letter by naming people who feel displaced. They are scattered across several regions, living as “exiles” in places that may have been familiar geographically but no longer felt like home spiritually. Following Jesus had changed their loyalties, values, habits, and hopes. They belonged to their communities, yet they also knew they belonged to another kingdom. Peter does not begin by telling them to work harder or become tougher. He begins by reminding them who they are: chosen by God.

Before Peter speaks about obedience, he speaks about grace. The Father has chosen them, the Spirit is making them holy, and Jesus has cleansed them through his blood. Their identity rests in God’s action, not their performance. They do not obey so that God might accept them. They are learning obedience because, through Jesus, God has already brought them near. The whole life of God is active in saving and forming them. They may feel scattered, but they are not forgotten. They may feel out of place, but they have not slipped outside God’s purposes.

You may know that feeling. A season of transition can leave you unsettled. A changing relationship, uncertain future, difficult workplace, family concern, or unanswered prayer can make life feel scattered. You may wonder where you fit or whether God is still at work. Peter’s opening words speak directly into that uncertainty: your circumstances do not have the authority to redefine what God has declared about you. In Christ, you are known, loved, chosen, and held.

This does not mean every question disappears, but it means you face your questions from a secure place. Jesus is not waiting for you to become steady enough before he claims you. He gave himself for you while you were still far from him. His blood has brought you into a new covenant relationship with God, and his Spirit is still shaping you. Your obedience today is not an anxious attempt to earn belonging. It is the grateful response of someone who already belongs.

Trust begins by receiving the identity God gives you. Obedience begins when you stop allowing fear, approval, or uncertainty to name you. You can take the next faithful step because the One who calls you is also the One who keeps you. Whatever feels scattered today, bring it before Jesus. Let his grace speak more loudly than your circumstances. You are not merely an exile. You are a chosen exile—temporarily unsettled, yet permanently held in the love of God.

This identity also changes how you relate to the world around you. You do not need to withdraw from people who do not share your faith, and you do not need to become defensive when you feel misunderstood. Because God has named you and claimed you, you are free to remain present, gracious, and faithful. You can love people without asking them to provide the belonging only God can give.

Reflection Questions:

  • What words does Peter use to describe the believers receiving his letter?
  • What does it mean to be both chosen by God and an exile in the world?
  • Where in your life do you currently feel scattered, displaced, or uncertain?
  • What faithful step can you take today because your identity is secure in Christ?

Journaling Prompt:

Take time to name the circumstances that have made you feel unsettled. Write about what changes when you view those circumstances from the secure identity God has given you in Jesus.
Prayer Starter: Thank you, Father, that I am known, chosen, and held by you. Help me live today from the security of your grace rather than the fear of what others think.
