FAITHFUL WITHOUT CONTROL
Read Daniel 10:1-19
Daniel receives something most of us would love to have: a glimpse behind the curtain. He learns that his prayer was heard from the first day. He learns that spiritual conflict was happening while he waited. Yet even after receiving all of that information, Daniel is still not placed in control. He is not given authority to manage every spiritual force, determine the timeline, or decide the outcome. His calling remains what it had been all along: seek God and remain faithful.
Control is one of the things we often want prayer to give us. We want to know what God is doing, when He will do it, and how the story will end. We want prayer to turn uncertainty into certainty. But Scripture repeatedly invites us into something deeper than control: trust. Daniel knows more by the end of these verses than he knew at the beginning, but he still needs faith. Knowing that there is an unseen battle does not remove his dependence on God.
Faith is not knowing exactly what God will do next. Faith is knowing enough about God to keep following Him when you do not know what He will do next.
Jesus gives us the clearest reason to trust. His disciples once faced a moment when everything visible seemed to suggest that God’s plan had failed. Jesus was crucified, His body was placed in a tomb, and a stone was rolled into place. From their perspective, the story appeared finished. Yet what they could see was not the whole story. Resurrection was coming. At the cross and empty tomb, Jesus showed that God can be working even when His people cannot understand what they see. Because Jesus is risen, we know that evil, suffering, and death cannot write the final chapter.
Where are you demanding control today? Maybe you are praying for someone you love, but you cannot change their choices. Keep praying and keep loving them. Maybe you are asking for healing. Keep asking with bold prayers and open hands. Maybe a relationship is broken. Pray for reconciliation and faithfully do the part Jesus gives you. Maybe God feels quiet. Do not confuse quiet with absent.
You cannot see the whole story. That is not a reason to stop praying. It is a reason to trust the One who can.
Reflection Questions:
- What does Daniel know by the end of this section that he could not see while he was waiting?
- Why is trust different from having control or complete understanding?
- Where are you currently struggling to release your need to know how something will turn out?
- What would remaining faithful to Jesus look like in that situation this week?
Journaling Prompt:
Take time to write about one situation you cannot control. Place it into Jesus’ hands in writing, then name the next faithful action you can take without needing to know the whole outcome.Prayer Starter: Father, help me trust You in what I cannot see and release what I cannot control. Give me courage to keep praying, listening, and following Jesus while the story is still unfolding.
