PEACE BE STRONG
Read Daniel 10:1-19
Daniel receives a glimpse of the unseen world, but his immediate response is not excitement. He is overwhelmed. His strength leaves him. He struggles even to speak and breathe. Then the heavenly messenger touches him and says, “Do not be afraid… Peace! Be strong now; be strong.” Daniel does not receive a command to take control of everything he has just discovered. He receives strength to stand.
Sometimes we assume that mature faith means becoming the kind of person who is never overwhelmed. We imagine that if we trusted God enough, fear would disappear, waiting would become easy, and we would always feel strong. Daniel shows us something different. He is a faithful servant of God, yet this experience leaves him weak and speechless. His weakness does not disqualify him. God meets him there. Daniel says that when the messenger speaks, he is strengthened.
Jesus repeatedly does something similar with His followers. Frightened disciples hear Him say, “Do not be afraid.” Weary people are invited to come to Him for rest. Paul later learns that Christ’s power is made perfect in weakness. Jesus does not save us by teaching us to become self-sufficient. He saves us because we cannot save ourselves. At the cross, Jesus accomplished what we could never accomplish, and through His resurrection He gives us life we could never create for ourselves. From beginning to end, following Jesus means receiving what only He can give.
Maybe right now you do not need a complete explanation nearly as much as you need strength for today. You would like God to tell you why the situation happened, how long it will continue, and exactly how everything will turn out. Sometimes God gives clarity. Often, He gives something else first: His presence, His peace, and enough strength to take the next step.
Peace does not come because Daniel has finally gained control. He still does not control what is happening. Peace comes because God remains God. Strength does not mean Daniel suddenly understands everything. It means he is able to continue faithfully.
You may be tired today. You may feel as though you should be stronger than you are. Instead of hiding that weakness from Jesus, bring it to Him. Then receive today’s strength for today’s obedience. You do not need strength for the entire future today. You need enough grace to follow Jesus in the next faithful step.
Reflection Questions:
- How does Daniel describe his condition before he is strengthened?
- What does “Do not be afraid…Peace! Be strong” reveal about how God meets human weakness?
- Where do you currently feel tired, overwhelmed, or inadequate?
- What is one faithful next step for which you need Jesus’ strength today?
Journaling Prompt:
Write honestly about the place where your strength feels limited. Welcome Jesus into that weakness and identify the next faithful step for which you need His strength.Prayer Starter: Jesus, I do not have to pretend that I am stronger than I am. Give me Your peace and enough strength to faithfully take the next step You place before me.
