YOUR WILL BEFORE MINE
Read Matthew 6:5-13
Jesus teaches us to pray, “Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” These words are familiar, but they are not safe or passive words. They are words of surrender. When you pray them, you are saying, “God, I want Your way more than I want to stay in control.”
God’s kingdom means God’s rule—life under His good leadership. So when you pray, “Your kingdom come,” you are asking God to make more of this world look the way He intends it to look. Where there is hatred, bring love. Where there is injustice, bring what is right. Where people are lonely, help them be seen. Where sin has damaged lives, bring forgiveness, freedom, and restoration. Where people do not know Jesus, let them encounter His grace and truth. This is a big prayer because God’s kingdom reaches into every part of life.
But this prayer becomes personal very quickly. It is easy to pray, “God, change the world.” It is harder to pray, “God, start with me.” If you ask God to bring reconciliation, He may show you someone you need to forgive. If you ask Him to encourage someone, He may prompt you to send the message. If you pray for your neighbor to know Jesus, He may invite you to build a real relationship with that neighbor. Prayer is not simply asking God to go do something somewhere else. Prayer makes you available to join Him.
Surrender does not mean you stop having desires. Jesus Himself honestly told the Father what He wanted in Gethsemane. Surrender means you stop insisting that God must do things your way before you will trust Him. You can ask boldly while still saying, “Father, You see more than I see. I trust Your wisdom more than mine.”
Jesus makes that trust possible. At the cross, it looked for a moment as if everything had gone wrong, yet God was accomplishing salvation through Jesus’ obedient surrender. Jesus trusted the Father all the way through death, and the resurrection showed that the Father’s way was not defeated. Because of Jesus, you can trust that God’s will is not careless or cruel. His character is good, even when His path is not the path you would have chosen.
So put the last word first today. Before you know the answer, say yes. Tell God what you want, but open your hands. Pray, “Your kingdom come. Your will be done. Show me where You are working, and give me courage to join You.”
Surrender may need to become very practical today. Maybe there is one outcome you have been gripping tightly: a decision, a relationship, a plan, or a timeline. You can tell God exactly what you hope happens. Then imagine opening your hands and saying, “I still want this, but I do not want it more than I want to follow You.” That is not giving up. That is trust.
Reflection Questions:
- What two things does Jesus teach us to pray for in Matthew 6:10?
- What does it mean for God’s kingdom to come into everyday life?
- Where are you most tempted to insist on your own way or timing?
- What would saying “Your will before mine” look like in that area today?
Journaling Prompt:
Write about one situation where you know exactly what you want God to do. Tell Him honestly what you desire, then write a simple statement of surrender placing the outcome into His hands.Prayer Starter: Father, Your kingdom come and Your will be done. Help me trust Your wisdom more than my own and give me courage to join You wherever You are working.
