PRAYER WITHOUT PERFORMANCE
Read Matthew 6:5-13
Jesus begins His teaching on prayer with a warning: prayer can become something it was never meant to be. Some people in Jesus’ day prayed so others would notice them. Others piled up words as if saying more could force God to listen. Jesus pushes both ideas aside. Prayer is not a performance for people, and it is not a formula for controlling God. Prayer is a relationship with your Father.
That is really good news if prayer has ever felt intimidating to you. You do not need polished words, a special voice, or a long prayer. You do not have to sound like a pastor or know exactly what to say. Jesus says your Father already knows what you need before you ask Him. God is not waiting for you to explain the situation perfectly. He already sees the fear you have not told anyone about, the decision you do not know how to make, the person you are worried about, and the places where you are struggling. You can simply come to Him honestly.
Jesus tells His followers to go into a room, close the door, and pray to the Father who sees what is done in secret. His point is not that public prayer is wrong. Jesus prayed with other people, and the early church prayed together. His point is that prayer is first about God, not about being noticed. When nobody else is listening, there is no one to impress. You can stop performing and start being honest. Maybe your prayer today is only, “Father, I need You.” That is a real prayer.
Jesus came to bring us back into relationship with God. Sin separates us from God, but through Jesus’ death and resurrection we are forgiven and welcomed near. We do not pray hoping we can earn God’s attention. We pray because Jesus has opened the way to the Father. That means you can come with gratitude, confusion, joy, fear, confession, or need. You are not trying to talk God into caring about you. In Jesus, God has already shown how deeply He loves you.
So today, resist the temptation to make prayer complicated. Find a quiet moment and talk to God honestly. Tell Him what is actually happening in you. Then leave some room to be quiet before Him. Prayer is not about saying the perfect thing. It is about coming to the perfect Father through Jesus and trusting that He sees you, knows you, and welcomes you.
Private prayer also teaches you that your relationship with God does not depend on anyone else watching. There will be days when nobody notices your faithfulness, nobody applauds your obedience, and nobody knows how hard it was for you to choose trust. Your Father sees. That quiet assurance can free you from needing spiritual attention from people. You can simply be with God, known by Him and loved by Him.
